Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change

Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15 that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. Blog Action Day 2009 will be one of the largest-ever social change events on the web.

The focused cause of the day today is Climate Change.

We’ve already posted a couple choices today that focused on Blog Action Day as well, but here at Choose Daily we wanted to take a moment and put together some common ideas for you on how you can help personally with climate change as well.

Use The Swirly Lightbulbs
Yes, we know they are the compact fluorescent bulb but “swirly lightbulbs” is just plain better. (Some might think otherwise if they were bullied in school. Do people actually give swirlies?) Backt to the point… Changing over to the compact fluorescent bulbs can save about 150 pounds of carbon dioxide each year, per bulb.

Drive Less or Just Use Your Feet
How close are you to your local stores? How about work? How many trips do you make to the store each week? Cutting down on our driving can have a great impact on climate change. Walk, bike, carpool, or take mass transit. Going to the store? Plan what you need so you can make less trips. Not only will this help towards climate change but will also help pad your pocket a little bit as well.

Wash in Cold Water
My wife hated me for trying to wash clothes in cold water until I showed her that there was hardly any difference at all in how they came out. Sure, there may be some items that need some hot water but the predominant amount of washing could be done in cold water. Using cold water means less energy wasted heating the water. This gives you a saving in your energy bill and helps out with climate change.

Plant a Tree
No, I’m not a tree hugger but a single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

So how about it? Are you making any changes today? If so, leave us a comment and share your ideas.
